The Challenges and Opportunities of My New Job

I know it’s tough for someone to find a job that they enjoy, but I think I might have finally found one! Not that it’s easy in any way… but the opportunities and skills I’m gaining are simply invaluable.

As stated in my update a couple weeks ago, I started my new gig in August. My new role had a huge learning curve, and was much more technical than I expected. I’m now in more of a platform support role than the QA/requirements role that I was used to. This includes deep investigation/debugging, searching through various logs, and a deep understanding of the system overall. Not only that, but I was expected to get up-to-speed extremely quickly, as the holiday season (October through December) is the biggest and most important season for the firm since it’s when they make nearly all of their money.
And what a season it was. My team bore the brunt of many of the issues that came through the system and most of them weren’t easy to solve. There was also a lot of turnover in those few months both within the team and within management. Combine that with long hours and on-call rotations every three weeks, and it could drive someone up a wall! It almost did so to me! Not to mention I was finishing up my last semester of my MBA degree…
Fortunately, I survived. And now we’re doing some pretty fun stuff! The IT department has realized that it’s in major need of an overhaul of its processes, tools, and organizational structure. While most people would run from the inefficiencies, uncertainty, and red tape that plague the company, I see… opportunity. To me, this is a very real opportunity to make some serious change within an enterprise-class company. I see all the processes I can help improve. I see my MBA degree being put to good use. I see the leadership skills, management skills, and technical skills I can pick up along the way. But what’s most important, I see all the success I can achieve, the lessons I will learn, and ultimately, entrepreneurship in my future.
More to come on the specifics of my experiences thus far!
