Making Health a Priority

We all know that eating healthier and exercising consistently can lead to a longer, healthier life. However, my struggle like many out there, is is with the amount of effort in order to become “healthy”. How healthy is healthy? Do I have to eat all organic foods or become a vegan? Can just eating less junk food cut it? If I take a walk 3x a week, is that enough or do I have to become a gym rat to add 5 more years of health? With all of the diet fads, things can get pretty complicated and very discouraging.

However, my health focus at this point is just on doing my best. I haven’t had the best of health in years past. I’ve been in and out of the hospital on quite a few occasions, and sickness was a regularity when I was a kid. However, I made a choice eat healthier foods and drink more water, and those changes alone have made vast improvements in my overall health. My goal is 60 or more ounces per day of water, combined with at least 2 servings of fruit and 2 servings of vegetables (I could probably do more on the fruit/veggie side, but baby steps, right?). With these two adjustments to my diet alone, I have improved my immune system to the point where I may catch a cold only once or twice a year, down from 3-4 times a year at the least. Also, I feel more energetic and focused, and I know my body is much cleaner and operates more efficiently.

I’m also working out 2-3 times per week. This is very important to me not only because I enjoy exercise–I actually require it to maintain my mood and mental health. When I don’t exercise, I often find myself more anxious and even borderline depressed at times. However, when I do get a chance to work out, I feel much more refreshed and motivated. Needless to say, I work out whenever I can.

In the future, I plan on eating less cheese and meats. Although I LOVE these two foods, I realize I eat way too much of the stuff and they can be a real drag on digestion. Instead of eating meats twice a day, I’d like to gradually decrease that to 4-6 times per week and . I don’t know how long it will take to make these challenging changes, but I need to make my health a priority so I can continue being successful!

Who knew that an apple a day could be so complicated… or so important?
