Where I’ve Been and Where I Am Now
My situation has definitely changed over the past two years.
2012 and 2013 were really strong years for me. First of all, a group of 3 friends and I had started a new club, Wolfgang Financial Club, to encourage financial knowledge sharing. Our mission is to help our members “improve their net worth by providing financial mentorship, individualized financial advice, and quality resources.” Since its inception in May 2012 we’ve held market knowledge presentations, invited a guest speaker, and even added a new member. We constantly challenge each other to make wise financial decisions and are looking to grow even more in 2014.
Second, and more importantly, I got hitched! Yes, I am no longer on the market and married my longtime love of 5 years in August 2013. Let me tell you, planning a wedding while in school was ludicrous! But thanks to the support of my wife and wise time and money management, we were able to tie the knot (without a financial burden, either)!
In the days leading up my wedding, I somehow found some time to find a new job. It’s funny because my roommate at the time had to literally talk me into even applying for the position! At that point, I was so consumed with my summer classes and last-minute wedding planning that I didn’t want to overwhelm myself. Nevertheless, I applied, interviewed, and got the job, increasing my salary by over 20%! Although the benefits and relationships I made over the 5 years I spent at my old gig were going to be sorely missed, I knew that this opportunity could not be passed up. Not only would I be able to save enough for a down payment on a home by the end of the year, but I would have much more opportunity for growth and experience in my new role, an additional plus.
To cap off an amazing run, I finally graduated with my MBA in December! The feeling of being done was indescribable. Not only did I get married and find a new job, but I finished my coursework too. These were huge milestones in my life, and I accomplished it all in one year. This goes to prove that with the right attitude, determination, and support, you can make good things happen.
I also squeezed in some time to learn more about investing, but more on that later…
