First Week of Classes

This week was my first week of classes at Georgia State University for my MBA program. Man, what craziness. For my first class, I had left my house almost an hour before it began, which I had assumed would be more than enough time. I definitely assumed wrong. A normal trip to campus is about 20 minutes, not including traffic. I figured that I would be going against the flow of traffic, and even if it took double the time to get there, I would still have 15 minutes to find parking and make a mad dash to my class. However, Atlanta traffic had different plans, causing me to take triple the time to get to campus and making me 20 minutes late for class. Awesome.

However, I finally did make it. My first class of the week was Managing in the Global Economy, which I’m pretty interested in (as interested as you can get about Economics and such, I guess). It will teach on the fundamental business aspects from a global business perspective, which means that I’ll be getting a crash course on how global companies run their business and how global factors can affect them. I already met with some of the people in the group assigned to me and so far they seem pretty cool.

My second class seems a bit more challenging. I was actually misled by the title of the class: Financial Statement Analysis. Little did I know that this was just a euphemism for Financial Accounting. Oh boy. Having an IT background, I don’t have an ounce of accounting experience, automatically putting me at a disadvantage in this class. One thing that may save me from struggling in this course is the fact that the teacher is a bit humorous and interesting. He may be able to explain things in a way that could help me understand the concepts better. We’ll see.

Earning my MBA is just one step in my path to success, but it is pretty exciting to actually see things taking shape. I really feel my MBA will help open doors further down the line. Hopefully I will take much away from this class and the program itself and be able to apply the newly-obtained information later in my career.

Here’s to the first successful semester of many!

  • Congratulations on starting your MBA Andrew! I started mine this semester too. I am taking accounting also and even with my International Business background I still don't like it, but it is a necessary evil.

I am enjoying your posts and I hope you have better luck getting to class on time next time around.
