How to Survive a Traffic Stop

How to Survive a Traffic Stop

Over the last few weeks we’ve had to, as a nation, deal with the very real racial tension and inequality that still sadly exists in our country.

Let’s be clear, I still very much support police officers and appreciate their commitment to our safety and communities. Unfortunately these are very real problems that exist and there is a desperate need for change and continued discussion when it comes police and the black community. There is no justification for taking anyone’s life especially based on the color of their skin, ethnic or religious background.

As an African-American man, there is a natural emotion to feel anger, fear and even pain in the face of so much injustice. I feel the fear that has polarized us as a nation, and as a race.

Although I am educated and consider myself successful, I could very easily put myself in the position of Alton Sterling or Philando Castile… and THAT’s scary.

BUT I refuse to live in fear.

Instead of living in fear, I’ve decided to become more informed about my rights and liberties  when getting pulled over in a traffic stop. Being aware of my rights ensures that I know how to properly respond in the event that I ever find myself pulled over. Knowledge is power and after much giving the topic much thought I’d like to share with you my tips on how to handle yourself if you’re ever pulled over in a traffic stop.

How To Handle a Traffic Stop and Live to Tell About It

1. Show Respect: This can make all the difference between a good and bad outcome. I understand that you may be nervous or even upset but always keep your cool and remain respectful.

2. Keep Your Hands On The Wheel: And don’t make any sudden moves; always make sure that the officer can see your hands.

3. Keep Your Windows Partially Rolled Down: Try to roll down your window before the officer approaches.

Additionally:

1. You do not have to answer any questions other than providing your legal name, and more often than not, it’s better that you don’t.

2. Your car cannot be searched without probable cause or a warrant but they can make you leave your car and pat you down.

Keep in mind that you may still end up with a traffic ticket but by keeping these important tips in mind you and the police officer can drive away both feeling respected and without incident.
